Quote - The most dangerous phrase in the English language is 'we have always done it this way.'

The most dangerous phrase in the English language is 'we have always done it this way.'

This first appeared  in Computer World January 26 1976.

On the future of data processing, Hopper said the most dangerous phrase a DP (data processing) manager can use is “We’ve always done it that way.”

This quote from the pioneer of computer programming indicates that Admiral Grace Hopper firmly believed in adapting to new technology with the changing times. She went on to say that  "If we base our plans on the present, we fall behind and the cost of carrying out something may be more costly than not implementing it."

Having an strong background, knowledge and even expertise about a particular subject sometimes stops us from looking beyond and accepting change in that area.

Admiral Grace Hopper rightly identified the danger in complacency, as this can stop us from developing our skills and capabilities further and can make us stand still.
