"I was taught that way of progress was neither swift nor easy."

This week's quote is by the distinguished Nobel laureate, French physicist, and chemist - Professor Marie Curie.

Marie Curie's Story

She studied at Warsaw's clandestine Flying University and began her practical scientific training in Warsaw. She was the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris.

Professor Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie along with physicist Henri Becquerel shared the Nobel Prize in 1903 for their pioneering work developing the theory of "radioactivity" (a term coined by Marie).

Using the techniques she invented for isolating radioactive isotopes, Professor Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911  for the discovery of two elements - polonium and radium.

She named the first element after her native country i.e. Poland.

Quote - "I was taught that way of progress was neither swift nor easy." - Marie Curie

This quote is esp[ecially meaningful as Marie Curie discovered her own path in a family of five Nobel prize winners.

It took time and extreme patience. Professor Curie was the first person to win two Nobel prizes in two scientific fields.

Professor Curie was able to achieve a tremendous scientific legacy due to hard work and determination throughout her life. Professor Curie made the ultimate sacrifice for the progress made as she died from aplastic anemia from exposure to radiation encountered in the course of her scientific research and her radiological work at field hospitals during World War I.
